To the first passage of your article - sounds familiar to me. A friend of mine is an army officer - he did the same every time we went to a restaurant. Now I try to do the same - or at least I understand why people intuitively try to park their back towards the wall.

It's a huge topic to discuss, and isn't just restaurants.

Where you sit in a theater is also important and for different reasons. My family typically sits in the front and at the bottom, and that puts us very close to the emergency exits.

Where you stand or sit on a metro system is also important. Which section of the train you ride on is too.
