Surveillance and Technical Surveillance Counter-MeasuressteemCreated with Sketch.

On LinkedIn yesterday, I read a very thorough article on surveillance. A great counter-surveillance tip was revealed by the author however, and it is well worth sharing with my friends here on Steemit. Within the article he wrote about how PI's will mark a vehicle in advance of a mobile surveillance operation.

By mark I mean actually place a reflective sticker or other marker on the vehicle. That way as it moves through traffic at night, the investigator will very easily see it while shadowing the suspect. There are countless other ways that this can be accomplished too. As another example for day surveillance, he suggested adding a neon colored ball to an antenna.

What vehicle owner isn't going to notice a neon ball on an antenna though?

The bottom line is that if you suspect that you may be the subject of vehicle surveillance, make sure you check your vehicle for obvious new markers such as he mentioned in the article. Don't add unique identifiers to your vehicle that can be spotted from far away either. It would also be wise to check the undercarriage for GPS tracking devices.

Different states and countries have different laws regarding the use of GPS trackers, but your state or country may allow them. Even if they are not allowed, unethical investigators may still use them. Don't depend on the law to maintain your privacy. Many agents of the state and private agents will ignore the law in favor of their objective.

You can hire Private Investigators, who specialize in TSCM (Technical Surveillance Counter-Measures), to scan your vehicle, work place, or home for surveillance electronics. If you are a corporate executive or have other reason to believe a scan would be worth your money, I highly recommend getting one done occasionally.

I sure hope I'd notice a lime green tennis ball on my antenna 😋. How many cars even have an antenna anymore? PI's can use social apps like four square & swarm since many people publicize their whereabouts. I've seen joggers sharing their path online which is both good and bad for obvious reasons. Makes it easier when people mark themselves for the investigator.

I recommend that anyone that approaches their vehicle and notices any sort of marking like that - check to see if you may be surveliience footage from a nearby camera. If someone is following you, it is nice to be able to identify them. Especially if they are using unethical practices.

I also suggest that people be careful when it comes to altering someone's property without their permission. My neighbor's father was staying with them for a bit and at the time they lived in Bethesda, MD. A busy city area, just outside of DC. The 70+ year old man heard a noise outside and went out to identify the source.. It was a man tampering with the rear door of his conversion Van across the street. My neighbor awoke to his father shooting up the back of the van with a Taurus raging bull 454! The suspect fled, but I'm sure took a valuable lesson upon his departure. I can't say that was the 'optimal' actions to take, but the fact is it happens. People should be careful, especially tampering with property! It's not worth losing life over.

TSCM - I never knew there was such a thing! That's awesome. Something you do yourself @finnian?

I plan to offer the service in the future. :)

Very interesting tricks...

BTW, for whatever reason, your GIF is not appearing? Maybe just a "temporary" glitch?

@creatr

Ack...I am not sure. It is an image stored by Steemit too. Hmmm

Edit: I went to check the one post, and it was definitely a glitch. I reuploaded it to steemit too.
