Bach - Komm Gott, Schöpfer, heiliger Geist BWV 631

in #secretsoforganplaying5 years ago (edited)

This is my first posting on Steemit. I am presenting Bach’s Komm Gott, Schöpfer, heilige Geist BWV 631 chorale prelude from the Orgelbüchlein. My first encounter with this anthology was back in 1972 when I had my first official organ lessons. Back then, I hardly had any idea how sophisticated these chorales are. Bach uses much material into a single page to make his profound statement. At the time, I had only learnt about three of the 45 chorales. I have taken the best part of over 40 years to set about learning all the rest. They show Bach at his very best and are a pinnacle of the organ’s literature. Bach has much to teach the student in these miniature masterpieces. In this performance I have chosen to preface the chorale prelude with the chorale itself.

The organ I play in the Jesuit chapel of St Aloysius’ College, Milsons Point, Sydney, was built by Létourneau in 1989, originally for St Joseph’s Basilica, Edmonton, Canada. The organ, dedicated to deceased alumni of the College, replaces a small, 4 rank extension organ which served the chapel from 1969. The Létourneau has a useful specification and looks as if it was made for the chapel. It just fits within 6 inches of the chapel ceiling of the chapel and is enhanced by the chapel’s good acoustic.

It's a bit strange to hear first the choral harmonisation and then the prelude. But I realise it can help to appreciate Bach's composition if one first hears the melody to which it is an introduction. Anyway, nice performance and welcome to the stil small community of organ players on Steemit.

If the congregation is musically educated, the harmonization should serve this purpose well...

Thank you. I chose to play the original chorale simply as a reference point. I look forward to making more contributions to this worthwhile group.
