Secrets of Organ playing Contest Week 89 Submission--Day 45: Ach, wie flüchtig, ach, wie nichtig, BWV 644 from Orgelbuchlein by J.S. Bach

After a week hiatus, I have returned to the Secrets of Organ Playing Contest with the next Chorale Prelude from Bach's Little Organ Book. This was a fairly difficult one to get in my fingers, and I am not overly happy with the tempo--I think it needs a bit more speed. But this is where I got it.

As the last prelude in the book, it is also the most Lutheran--by saying everything is useless. Bach captures the fog of life in the meandering sixteenth note passages that pass back and forth between the right and left-hands. Meanwhile the pedals seem to represent the rise of man only to fall in the end. Another author linked the pedals to the ticking of time, but I like the first idea better. Meanwhile, the chorale floats above all this activity like it hasn't a care in the world.
