Sinfonia from Cantata BWV 29 - Johann Sebastian Bach | Secrets of Organ Playing Contest Week 29

in #secretsoforganplaying5 years ago (edited)

Hello everyone. This is my entry for the Secrets of Organ Playing Contest Week 29. I'm playing a transcription of JS Bach's Sinfonia from Cantata BWV 29 by Harvey Grace. I would have loved to record this on a real pipe organ, but as you know, the organ I usually record on is still undergoing maintenance and won't be fully back in action until next month (at the earliest!).

This is a really exciting work and I wish it was a little bit longer! I feel it is over too quickly. It is quite a technically demanding piece for me to play (it's relentless!) and there are some moments that I stumble over. I need to continue to work on it to make sure it is much cleaner. There is further room for improvement, but recording for this contest is excellent preparation.

I'm sure many Steemians have heard this piece somewhere, not realising the title of the work. It has been transcribed for so many different instruments and ensembles. On the organ, I believe the most popular arrangement is by Dupré (it must have been the first) and on IMSLP there is the Guilmant arrangement. I started learning the Guilmant arrangement but I changed to the Harvey Grace arrangement as per recommendation of my teacher. There are many different interpretations of this work on YouTube—the most popular way is to "orchestrate" it with Swell box manipulation and registration changes. I chose to just play everything on the plenum and I think it is just as effective :)

@partitura - I spent some time trying to "pretty up" the audio to make it seem more realistic :) I hope you like my non-Hauptwerk recording!

That's a lot of notes per minute. You could impress a professional typist... :-)

And the organ does sound much more lively. Thoug that could be because of your playing of this piece as well.

@organduo, I just realised I played BWV 29 on week 29 of the contest...hahaha!

I know what you will play next week... Solid playing! Not easy arrangement...
