What is screen resolution in age of 4K

in #screens2 years ago (edited)

Looking at market trends in LCD monitors for PCs, the second half of the 2000s saw the transition from square to wide screens all at once, and currently the trend is toward larger screens and higher resolutions.

In a light of changing landscape simple question of what is my screen resolution may get complicated real quick.

Best-selling monitor from LCD is the 23-inch model with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels ( HD), but 4K screens, which offer four times the resolution, are on the rise, and there is a new trend of moving to high resolution (increasing pixel density) without increasing the size of the screen

It is predicted that 4K will replace full resolution HD as the mainstream resolution in the next few years. 4K, of course, stands for 4,000 and refers to a horizontal pixel count of approximately that number. Currently, there are two standards for 4K resolution, namely "DCI 4K" and "UHD 4K".

4K displays for current PCs primarily have the UHD 4K resolution like 4K TVs. However, there are some products that have adopted the DCI 4K standard, such as the ColorEdge CG318-4K color management monitor for video production.

The shift to high-resolution displays does not stop at 4K. 27-inch displays (5120 x 2880 pixels/16:9) that support 5K are already being marketed. The question is what to use the very high resolution of 5K for, but there is the advantage of being able to place toolbars and other elements on the screen while viewing 4K content with video editing software.

As screen resolutions get higher, a new element to consider when selecting a screen is pixel density. Pixel density on displays is an indication of the level of resolution, and the value is usually expressed in ppi. Ppi stands for "pixels per inch" (not per square inch). One inch is equivalent to 2.54 centimeters.

The higher the pixel density of the screen, the higher the sharpness of the OS and applications, but there were no screens with such a high pixel density that they could not be used in practice, so this did not cause major problems. Depending on how high the pixel density was, the icons and fonts appeared larger or smaller, but the sharpness was enough for users to recognize them.

When choosing a LCD in the future, one will also have to consider the pixel density that results from the combination of screen size and resolution.
