I Have to Be Honest I Love This Trap/Screamo SCXRLXRD Album “DXXM”

Even though hybrid nu-metal-screamo-trap music with a strong soundcloud hip-hop aesthetic is everybody’s worst nightmare, it is also fun.

Someone was going to figure out how to take trap to an even louder, even more extreme, even more abrasive level, while still maintaining the mainstream appeal of it all. Here it is. I don’t know that this can ever become “mainstream,” but the guy seems to have quite a few popular videos:

My first reaction -

  • Even though the gimmick factor is real, each song on his new album DXXM has its own unique idea to it. I think the artist and his producers succeed at creating a mildly diverse experience, even if the overall sound is one dimensional.
  • The first listen is awesome if you are open to these kinds of sounds
  • After about 2 songs you pretty much know everything he’s gonna do
  • When he raps without screaming as much, even just for a little bit, it adds a huge amount of sonic range to the vibe. If hes gonna expand his sound, I think itll have to involve some of that.

It’s fun music and interesting to hear what must be the loudest, most extreme, harshest form of pop trap music.

I actually wonder if anybody can stomach this for a full hour or more in a concert. That’s the only thing with this kind of music… for me it’s actually more of an intellectually fun style, to analyze how the thing is possible, whereas the listening experience is so extreme that it makes my ears tired after a while.

I doubt his audience feels this way, but IMO, it just needs some softer elements. If even 20% of the album was a little more toned down, it could create more space for the heavy shit to hit even harder. Its the same with a lot of metal albums.

If you like unusual listening experiences you may as well listen to the album once, it’s worth it. I will go back to a few songs for sure because I do enjoy this in small doses, even if it’s ridiculous.

Why is this style called "trap"?

Well this exact style of SCXRLXRD is kind of its own thing, the extreme screaming and distortion are ridiculous even by modern standards (And I like it for that).

Trap in general, though I dont know the full history super well, is about the lifestyle of "trapping" which as far as I understand it is like the non-bling version of gangsta rap, talking about the lifestyle doing drugs and stealing shit and just getting by in the jungle of poverty.

Like this song for example is about making crack as far as im told

It's"trappin" the same way rock stars represent the "rock" lifestyle, which also was drugs and sex and stuff just a different flavor.

The general sound of trap is just that big drum beat with the huge bass and kick drum, like any Kendrick Lamar or Drake or Lil Pump or basically any major hip hop these days.
