رياضة التنس أو كرة المضرب تعتبر ثاني أكثر الرياضات شعبيّة في العالم بعد كرة القدم، وقد كانت تُدعى لعبة الملوك، حيث إنّ نُبلاء فرنسا كانوا هم أول من مارسوا هذه اللعبة، وذلك باستخدام كف اليد لضرب الكرة بدلاً عن المضرب حينها، وقد كان ذلك في القرن الثالث عشر الميلادي، ثم تم استخدام المضرب بشكلٍ فعليٍّ في القرن الخامس عشر الميلادي، وقد كانت تأخذ طابع اللاتنافسية حتى ذلك الوقت، ثم أقيمت أول بطولة رسمية لهذه الرياضة في إنجلترا، في مدينة ويمبلدون، سنة 1887م، وقد سُمّيت باسم (بطولة ويمبلدون)، وفي عام 1887م تم إنشاء اتحادٍ خاص بهذه اللعبة.

تمارس عادة في الهواء الطلق في ملاعب داخلية مغلقة. وإنما يتبارى في هذه اللعبة شذا رأس بيضوي الشكل مشدود بالأوتار فهو يقذف به كرة مطاطية مكسوة باللباد. والهدف من اللعب تسجيل النقاط بإرسال الكرة إلى منطقة الخصم بحيث يعجز عن ردها أو بحيث يردها ولكن بعد أن تمس الأرض أكثر من مرة, أو بإرسالها إلى منطقة الخصم وإكراهه على ردها على نحو تمس معه الشبكة أو تقع خارج حدود الملعب. أهم ما يميز لعبة التنس عن غيرها من بقية الألعاب الأخرى هو انها تفيد أجزاء كثيرة من الجسم فضلا عن التوافق الذي تتطلب ممارسة اللعبة بين الذهن وكافة عضلات الجسم.
