Loved it!
The solution to this guy's problem: Die close to the door, and use the old body for food and tools. Eventually, create a new society of self-clones, develop space travel, and continue on journey. Leave warm, dark planet improved.
That's pretty close to what I had planned for a sequel. Except he achieves a society where everybody gets whatever they want the instant they want it, and realizes it's even worse
