The Power of Disinfectants (#Sciencepic)
In the picture you can see the effect of different disinfectants. A plate with nutritional agar was covered in E. Coli bacteria and little pieces of paper soaked in disinfectants were put in four sectors on the plate.
Upper left is just water, upper right 2% formaldehyde, lower left 70% ethanol and lower right 10% Sagrotan which is a hand disinfectant.
The plate was then left in an incubator to grow.
As you can see, there are clear circles around all papers that weren’t soaked in water. That is the area bacteria weren’t able to grow. The bigger the circle, the more effective the disinfectant.
#sciencepic is an initiative to bring more scientific knowledge to steemit and to promote the @steemstem project.

Picture was taken by me
70% etehanol, because More effective to prevent bacteria growth, Ethyl alcohol (CH3CH2OH) kills bacteria in 2 ways, namely protein denaturation and fat membrane dissolution. Protein is one of the constituents of bacterial cells. Proteins play an important role in the cell. If likened, protein is the machine of the cell. Protein in this bacterial cell will work well if soluble in water. Well when there is ethanol in the bacterial cell environment, the protein solubility will decrease, why? Because Ethanol is water soluble in all comparisons. They both (ethanol and water) are also called two miscible liquids. While sagrotan is a disinfectants material widely used in cosmetic ingredients.
Always great posts, I really think you are one of the most interesting bloggers here.
Thank you, I'm always happy to entertain :)
Fascinating, always wondered what types of tests were done to prove whether or disinfectants sold to us actually worked or not. Now, I am at least more at ease knowing there are ways for people to actually know. Thanks,
Upvoted and reesteemed!
Now people will say, vaccines have formaldehyde that is so toxic only 2% can do what 70% ethanol can't do XD, and gave them a legit reason to think drinking a lot is ok
I was waiting for next monday for the red for the antibiotics paper disc assay haha, you were one step ahead of me as always~
Post it anyway, it's slightly different and you can add additional info on antibiotics.
I will for sure, trying to keep posting #sciencepic to help @steemSTEM grows ; ]
Now I can see the picture, that's quite the impressive result for formaldehyde . I don't know why but I was expecting the ethanol to have the better results, I guess you really do learn something new every day. :)
That's a fun and easy way to show the power of disinfectants.
However, even though this is a simple way of presenting this, not everybody is able to understand. I looked at the picture a long time "How did the bacteria grow in such round shape in every type of disinfectant, why were all of them as ineffective?"
Maybe I should read first and try to understand the photo after it.
Great post @suesa. I published a journal article using silver nanoparticles to inhibit microorganism growth in 2016. I relate well with this post. Keep promoting science.
That is definately a great experiment!
I would love to know the types of bacteria from my body!
Is good sis.. @suesa
Good. Upvoted. Resteemed.
