The scientific name of tomato is Solanum lycopersicum, though it is fruit, it is termed as vegetable and it is actually account for 14% of the total vegetable production world wide. Tomato originated from the South America, and though extensive domestication and cultivations, tomato has acquired quite a number of mutations, leading to different types of phenotypes, or morphologies of the fruits. In the photo, it shows a breed of tomato call the ox heart tomato. Wild type tomato are actually very small in size, usually the size of cherry, but after the selective breeding from farms, the accumulation of the desirable mutation genes were retained and lead to the diversify tomato breeds that we can enjoy today~
