O Christmas Tree

Ordinary Christmas tree are usually decorated with lights and ornaments, but this very unique Christmas tree of mine can light up by itself (visible only in extremely dark environment and requires special long exposure camera for the image capturing). The Christmas tree is actually drawn using bacteria that carries the bacterial luciferase gene, which is an enzyme that catalyse the release of light energy from ATP and luciferin. The bacterial luciferase gene is located behind a gene promoter, which act as a switch to control the amount of the enzyme produce and therefore affecting the final amount of light being captured (more enzyme, more light, more to the red end of the side bar). This is a common system biologists employ to study how the physiological change of the bacteria will affect certain genes expression (by monitoring the intensity of the light). And of course for other biologist, we will make arts out from them~

普通的聖誕樹通常裝飾著燈光和裝飾品,但是這種非常獨特的聖誕樹可以自己發亮(只有在極其黑暗的環境中才能看到,需要專門的長時間曝光照相機才能進行圖像拍攝)。聖誕樹實際上是利用攜帶細菌螢光素酶基因的細菌繪製的,該基因是一種催化ATP和螢光素釋放光能的酶。細菌螢光素酶基因位於基因啟動子的後面,基因啟動子作為開關來控制酶產生的量,因此影響捕獲的最終光量(越多的酶,越多的光,越多的紅端[在側桿的顏色表])。這是生物學家用來研究細菌的生理變化如何影響某些基因表達(通過監測光的強度)的常用系統。當然,對於其他生物學家,我們也會從他們身上"創作"藝術。

This is fun, but you get to work with fluorescence probes lol

Nice! I like how individual colonies growing adjacent to the main streak look like ornaments a little bit. You even have a star at the top.

Ha! Great post and very neat idea! - Just curious: How long do you need to set the exposure time for the camera to get a reasonable image?
