Nuclear batteries can work for thousands of years without recharging

in #science8 years ago

Experts from the University of Bristol have developed a prototype of a nuclear battery that can supply the not too powerful devices with energy for thousands of years. In this release of radiation and pollutants zero, according to the university's website.

What is a nuclear battery

Inside a nuclear battery installed artificial diamond. It generates small power electric current when placed in a radioactive field.
Scientists have used nickel-63 as the radiation source. However, if we replace it with carbon-14, generated in the graphite blocks, the isotope can improve the efficiency of the device.

Battery-on-carbon 14 discharged by half for 5730 years

In nuclear batteries are no moving parts in the process need not be maintained. Batteries do not create radioactive emissions and does not adversely affect the environment. Radioactive isotopes are actually encapsulated in synthetic diamonds. This ensures long-term generation of clean energy.

Application of Nuclear Batteries

Nuclear batteries to be used in pacemakers and other devices, which are implanted into the human body. They will be used in drones, space vehicles and other installations located in remote places. In general, these batteries can be installed anywhere you need a source of energy a relatively small capacity, which does not require charging and maintenance.

Interesting.
I hope they plan to use this tech on cellphones!

For companies it is not profitable.

Perhaps only due to competition
