55-73% of oceanic surface is being fished, and that is not completely bad news
A new understanding of ocean harvesting by commercial vessels
A new analysis of ship positioning data collected between 2012 and 2016 reveals that more than half of the world's ocean area is being fished. The data was obtained from satellite automatic ship identification (ASI), an important system in the prevention of collisions which nowadays supplements radar. Due to certain satellite blindspots, the scientists had to extrapolate their data, yielding the upper estimate of 73% from their observed 55%.
Good news?
This is the first high-resolution analysis of coastal and high-seas fisheries. Previous, less-accurate estimates placed ocean fishing at much higher levels, above 90%. Thus, the new data should allow governments to designate the already non-used or low-use ocean areas as natural reserves without clashing too much with economic interests.

What a nice post. But do you know that some part of the world are not fished. They are just speculating based on the data they have.
