In modern culture? We are taught to do it as a primary means of dealing with emotion - especially males. That is beginning to shift and we have a long way to go. One of my biggest goals in life is to ensure our education systems teach emotional intelligence and processing. Most people don't know what to do with their emotions and they end up wreaking havoc on their lives.
i have seen a lot of people trying to go into relationships because it is the norm. How easily do they get their heart broken because they had no proper orientation of engaging their emotions properly. I also believe this might be one of the primary factors of suicide attempts
