Fascinating thought experiment. The thing is inertia means it couldn't just suddenly stop spinning either - if it happened slowly enough it might not lead to immediate disaster.

The other thing to consider is the position it stops in would put one side of the planet in daylight and the rest into night for several months of the year. Currently that only happens at the poles. The climactic effects could be immense even if you exclude effects relating to the core.

Yes, this situation is just impossible which I've mentioned above.
The day and night concept that we have today would cease to exist too! Even if this happens gradually, which it is, days and nights will become longer and longer.

I'm surprised nobody has done a movie on it! They don't have to be plausible. There was a Futurama episode though:)
