The black people with an uncommon/rare eye colour, while looking through a few pictures on Instagram,I came across a photo of two identical twins who are black, same eye colour yet one among the twins had two distinctive eye colours, anyway, one is blue and the other brown. I began to wonder why such beautiful and uniquely awesome sets of eyes? I thought to myself could it be a genetic pattern or a natural phenomenon?

It's exceptionally uncommon for a black person to have such eyes , don't misunderstand me that no black individual cannot have such eye colour, just saw that this specific colour is dominant to other natural eye colour we commonly see, more reason why I am keen to knowing what could be responsible for such rare eye colour. I have made several research work concerning this, i was informed it could be as a result of Waardenburg syndrome.

I know you are somewhat befuddled like I was on what Waardenburg syndrome actually is, well let me explain further, according to raredisease, Waardenburg syndrome which is (Ws) is a group of genetic conditions characterized by varying degrees of hearing loss and differences in the coloring (pigmentation) of the eyes, hair and skin. It's common features includes congential sensorineural deafness, pale blue eyes, different colored eyes or two colours within one eye,a white forelock or early graying of scalp hair before 30years of age.

About the blue effect: The genes does not create a blue iris but rather it turns off the mechanism that produces the brown melanin pigment . Originally we all have brown eyes by prof Hans Eiberg.

Mutation in EDN3 (endothelin3 ) ,ENDRB (Endothelin receptor type B), MITF, PAX3 , SNA 12 and SOX10 Genes can cause Waardenburg syndrome. These genes are involved with the formation and development of several types of cells including pigment-producing cells called Melanocytes, which adds/contributes to skin, hair and eye colour and plays a good role in the normal function/capacity of the inner ear. Mutation in any of these genes disrupt the normal development of melanocytes, leading to abnormal pigmentation of the skin, hair and eyes , including problems with hearing. source.

The side effects of Waardenburg syndrome.

  • wide sets of eyes
  • Deafness caused by problems of the inner ear.
  • Partial albinism(pale colour skin, hair and eyes.
  • Possible slight decrease in intellectual function.
  • People with this have missing cells in the large intestine which results in frequent constipation.

There are four distinguished types of WS, and its distinguished by their physical characteristics and sometimes by their genetic causes.

  • Type 1 and 11 have same features : Eyes appeared to be widely spaced (wide eye set) gray hair and skin pigmentation.

  • Type 111 which is also known as Klein -Waardenburg syndrome, a person with this particular type said to have abnormalities it arms and hands.

  • Type 1V comes with blockage of intestine,or the person keeps having frequent constipation.
