Sitting Too Much Ages You By 8 Years! Did You Know?

in #science7 years ago

I am seated on one small chair for around 8 hours a day. There is so much pain involved! There are many spasms involved! There is extreme stress involved!

Well, not very sure if this; is especially in my case. I am pretty tall and to sit down for long periods, on an undersized chair is really really stressful.

There is no way to escape the stress as sitting is directly related to your entire body. I mean, your mid-section or butt is burning.

In my case, the chair is slightly short and the seat/slab to support the thighs; isn't wide enough, thus, stress!

Too much stress that it shows: bloodshot eyes at times, migraines, neck and back pains, leg cramps, knee cap pains, thigh pains!

Too much stress, that i can't sleep and haven't had any real sleep in months!

It bothers me a lot but i end up doing it again and again!

All night and i am back on that chair, taking in calls! A headset, PC and a small chair for hours each day, equals 'intense stress'.

Can the above activity, especially the sedentary aspect; shorten life span as well?

Just perhaps!

My bother, drove me into slight research. First; remedy for my sleep issues but nothing has worked! I have done boiled banana and cinnamon, yoga, milk and some medication but these haven't worked. Going back to that chair each night; seems to crush every effort as my body is drained but my eyes is exploding with tension and can't shut down.

I think the eyes is 'the PATHway' to sleep. It feels like after all, the eyes is the gateway; the door to SLEEP.

Now to the main topic!

A small research and i see that sitting for long periods daily, leads to quicker aging!

It is seen to have detrimental effects on cells, according to the American Journal of Epidemiology.

In this new study, scientists led by Aladdin Shadyab, a post-doctoral expert in family medicine and public health at the University of California San Diego, tried to identify the impact of too much sitting; on the chromosomes by studying blood samples from nearly 1,500 older women and focusing on the telomeres

Telomere refers to the tip of the tightly packed DNA in every cell.

It is established that as cells divide and age, they lose bits of the telomeres, so the length of this region can be used to identify how old a cell is and indirectly the aging pattern of the cell's host.

The researchers compared telomere's length amongst the group of women who exercised, to see if physical activity affected aging

For this study, Shadyab had these women wear accelerometers for one week, to gather a more reliable recording of the extent of their physical activities.

Those who spent more time sitting down, especially those who stayed sedentary for about 10 hours or more; had shorter telomeres, than those who spent less time sitting everyday.

The amount of shortening added up to about eight years of aging, according to the scientists; meaning that inactive women who spent more time sitting down; were about 8 years older on average, than those who were inactive but spent less time sitting down.

Women who engaged in the recommended amount of daily exercise within this study; showed no association between their sedentary duration and their telomere length, indicating that physical activity might counteract the aging effect of too much sitting!

Eventual results from this study, according to Shadyab; indicates that the combination of being sedentary and not engaging in sufficient physical activity, leads to shorter telomere length, which ultimately means faster aging!

Bottomline is women who were found to be sedentary for at least 10 hours a day and without active physical activities, were biologically older as their cells are aging faster than in women, who were less sedentary or sedentary and exercising!

Based on the above study, it is potentially evident that sitting down too too much has aging effects on the cells, and exercise can help in combating this ageing effect. It isn't determined though, how much exercise!

In my case, the stress alone is extreme and without being told, i am pretty sure that hastens aging!

Hahaha, i mean my butt is already afraid of chairs. Once it touches on something called a chair, the stress part no longer delays! I stand up to walk and i instantly feel new to walking!

And whether my exercise is sufficient is yet to be known. For the most part, i play basketball most weekends and it is vigorous!
