Terraforming Mars by using a giant magnet

We know that once, Mars was a planet that had a vast sea under oxygen rich skies and as far as we know it had all the right conditions for life! But around 4.2 billion years ago, Mars lost it's magnetic field which protected the young planet from a continuous barrage of charged particles ejected from the sun.
But once the magnetic field was gone, Mars's rich atmosphere was blown away out of the solar system.

And all that's left now, is the rocky, cold and uninhabitable planet that we know today.
But is it possible to make Mars habitable again?
Nasa might have a new strategy. The theory is that by placing a large magnetic dipole shield between the Sun and Mars, we will be able to protect Mars from Suns solar wind, and perhaps establish a new atmospheric equilibrium.NASA-Mars-Magnetic-Field.png
Mars would 'live' in the dipole's magnetotail, restoring its lost magnetosphere. Giving the planet the chance to form once again its long lost atmosphere. As the atmosphere thickens the planet's climate would become warmer, which would melt the carbon dioxide ice at the polar caps. The carbon and vapor in the atmosphere would trap heat creating a green house effect, which would lead the return of Mars's 'oceans'. This would give Mars a better chance at becoming a habitable planet.

At the moment this is just a theory but there is already research underway in to miniature magnetospheres that might one day protect human spacecrafts.
