The Long Death of a Star

Stars die all the time, which leaves some cool pictures for us

This is a picture of NGC 6565, by the Hubble Space Telescope. The star in the center is surrounded by clouds of gas, which were once part of its surface. The gas is lit up by the exposed core of the star. Planetary Nebula glow like this for only about 10,000 years. This may seem long but is a blink on the cosmological time-scale. [1]

This will happen to many stars, including the sun. Medium sized stars will run out of hydrogen to fuse and start fusing helium, growing massively in size. This type of star is called a red giant. The outer layers of the star will eventually float off into space, exposing the core and leaving a nebula. This turns the star into a white dwarf.[2]

The Death Star strikes again! Darth Vader is somewhere smiling

didn't that only destroy planets though?

I don't know, we need are steemit star wars buffs to answer that one

It is gorgeous O_o

everything in space is ;)

I agree :)

What I find most amazing is that when these images are captured most people don't realize that this has already happened and is done, And what we are seeing is left overs :P Thank you for sharing this beautiful picture!

It really depends on how far away you are and how you view the universe.

The information is only getting to this point in space now, so it is like it is happening now.

uh kind of i guess lol, If you want the fun thought of it. it really isn't happening now. If i had the tech to make a wormhole to this location in space, That star or the remnants would be gone, Why? because it isn't happening now. you are seeing the remnants of light that took so long to travel. You should look into how time really works though most don't have a rational ideal of what time really is.
