Silhouette of the ISS

in #science7 years ago

This is a picture of the International Space Station silhouetted against the sun

This picture was taken during the solar eclipse August 21st. If you were unaware, this is the one you probably heard in the news recently. The partial eclipse covered all of North America, some of Europa, Africa, and South America, giving a lot of people an opportunity to see it. (Except for me, it was cloudy kms). Right now the ISS is on mission 52 and has 6 crew members on board. [1]

Keeping people alive in space long-term is complicated. There are a lot of different things people need to survive: Air, water, food, and shelter. It is hard to find enough air in space, so scientists have to keep enough oxygen in the air and other dangerous chemicals like carbon dioxide and ammonia at low levels. Electrolysis is used to produce oxygen from water. This happens all the time on Earth through plants, although it is not a mechanical process. Originally the hydrogen leftover from this was vented into space, but there are plans to prevent this waste. Adding hydrogen to waste carbon dioxide can create methane and water. The water that otherwise would have been lost.[2]
