Uranus Facts

in #science7 years ago

One of our 8 planets is unlike any other. This is Uranus.

It tilts in its axis by 98o. That’s extreme compared to Earth’s (23o). But that’s not all.

When Voyager 2 first flew by Uranus in 1986…it revealed that Uranus’s magnetic field also tilts by 60o. To compare, Earth’s magnetic field closely lines up with its axis. This keeps Earth’s protective magnetic shield stable. But that’s not the case for Uranus. Uranus’ magnetic shield is constantly moving around. No other planet does this. Its extreme magnetic tilt makes the magnetic shield unstable.

This can temporarily expose Uranus to the Sun’s deadly wind. If the same thing happened on Earth, life would be impossible. Uranus is not an ideal place for alien life, but its weird magnetic field might be common on exoplanets.

That’s why understanding this unusual planet is so important. It will hone future searches for life beyond the solar system
