Vera Rubin - Dark Matter Pioneer That Changed Science Died at 88 Years old.

in #science8 years ago (edited)

She never stared in a movie about space but she certainly knew more about space than any star

(free to use go nuts)

She was the first women to do many things in the world of modern science. She confirmed the existence of Dark Matter which basically is the space between objects in the universe that we can't see. Arguably one of the greatest discoveries our our time in regards to space.

She died on December 25, 2016, Princeton, New Jersey, United States

"Rubin racked up many top prizes in her field. According to various biographies, she was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1981. In 1993, she received the National Medal of Science, the country's highest scientific prize. In 1996, she became the first woman since 1928 to receive the Royal Astronomical Society's Gold Medal."

She studied the spiral effect galaxies have and made some impressive discoveries shortly after being the first woman allowed in the Caltech's Palomar Observatory. Which didn't even have a ladies bathroom until she arrived and made one by putting the girl symbol on one of the men's rooms.

She deserves much more attention than she is getting. She changed science and made it more open for women.

Vera Rubin you have been Immortalized on the blockchain never forgotten.

Sort:

Her death has also started a debate on the fact she was not awarded the Nobel Prize. She deserved it, and I feel she should be awarded, even if it is posthumous.

Great article, thanks!

Yes i read about that as well. Such a pity and so deserving.

I left that bit out since it was just near miss of all her victories.
Glad you enjoyed.

I do not put any stock in the Nobel prize. They have messed up too many times Like giving the peace prize to O-bomba. Like splitting the Nobel prize between Tesla and Edison. Like...

Yes I agree that these days the award has come under a cloud and is losing appeal, but it still remains the one yardstick used to highlight groundbreaking contributions to science. And IMO, Ms Vera should have got the award way back in the 90's, when her discoveries had a profound effect on science and altered its course.

I agree. It's become too political.

A rare breed of woman.
