The Humanoid Robot From Boston Dynamics Can Do Parkour

in #science6 years ago

Many of you have likely seen the Atlas robot from Boston Dynamics. It’s the wonder robot who is designed like a human and can do many impressive things. And now he can run over obstacles.

In the past, we’ve already seen the Atlas robot do very awesome things. First, we saw him walk upright. Then we got to see him carry many things and we’ve even seen him do a backflip. And now he can do something new.

The engineers decided to focus on “flow” and how the robot can overcome multiple obstacles that have different height and placements. The robot's software thus has to coordinate all the robot’s body parts – that are connected by 28 joints based on the data from all the sensors and cameras. And it has to do it in a way so the robot doesn’t stop yet while accounting for acceleration, weight, and balance without any loss in speed.

As you can see in the video, the obstacles the robot had to go over were on all sides and their height was 40 centimeters – which is quite a lot for the 75 kg robot. But Atlas managed to get over them without any problem. Now we have to be even more worried about the eventual robot uprising because now it will just be harder to run away from our future robot overlords.
