Energy Explosion Detected In Earth’s Magnetosphere

in #science5 years ago

As magnetic fields change, sometimes they touch and fire off a magnetic explosion. One such explosion was detected the American mission MMS

Magnetic fields aren’t static. They move around and sometimes in amazing ways. One such was is called magnetic reconnection. That happens when two lines of a magnetic fields touch and a new very short line gets created that “short-circuits” the fields.

Magnetic reconnections aren’t anything rare. And they happen all the time in our planets magnetic field. Yet, we don’t know that much about them as observing them directly is quite difficult because they happen so fast. But we know they exist. And scientist even though that the energy explosions that accompany them can have serious effects. They spark auroras and if one happen during a solar storm it would be these energy explosions that would destroy our electric grid.

But now scientists from the University of New Hampshire managed to do something great while observing an event that was connected to a “magnetic short-circuit”. Four MMS probes were observing the Earth’s magnetic tail – an area where the Earth’s magnetic field is protected from the sun by the Earth. And they managed to detect a symmetrical magnetic reconnection.

Hopefully, the data that we managed to collect will allow us to better understand magnetic reconnections and the accompanying energy explosions. Now we have to study them deeply as they can potentially pose a serious threat to our civilization.
