A Neuromorphic Supercomputer SpiNNaker Is Made From One Million Cores
SpiNNaker is the worlds largest neuromorphic computer in the world. It can simulate parts of the brain in real time or test neural networks for robots. Yet, it’s just one-thousandth of the neurons in the human brain.
Nowadays there are three avenues the world of electronics is heading to. Artificial Intelligence – the golden child of computing, Quantum Computers – which utilize the mysterious world of quantum and Neuromorphic Computers that simulate how a biological brain works. The funny part is, we don’t really understand how intelligence, nor the quantum world nor how brains work. But it seems, that’s not really a problem when developing revolutionary computers.
On the 2nd November of 2018 scientists from the British Manchester University launched the amazing neuromorphic supercomputer named SpiNNaker (Spiking Neural Network Architecture). This is the largest neuromorphic in the world made from one million processing cores in 57 CPUs. It is capable of performing 200 million operations per second is at the moment the most complex imitation of a biological brain.
While SpiNNaker is still far away from the complexity of the human brain it will still be quite useful. It will allow us to model parts of the human brain in real time. For example, it will simulate the basal ganglia – the part of the brain that is affected by Parkinsons. And that’s not all. It will also be used to test gigantic neural networks for advanced robots. It already had the chance to drive the SpOmnibot and allowed it to analyze visual data in real time to navigate in its surroundings.
