Artificial Cellulose Nanofibers; The toughest biomaterial in the world, stronger than steel and spider silk

in #science6 years ago

It has managed to produce a biomaterial stronger than any other known. It is stronger than steel and even spider silk, the most resistant natural fiber that humans know. Therefore, the development of a biomaterial that is also biodegradable is an excellent achievement that we are talking about today.

Artificial Cellulose Nanofibers

A group of researchers from the Royal Institute of Technology of the Swedish capital, Stockholm, has created the strongest biomaterial in the world using compressed cellulose nanofibers in the laboratory, which gives them a superior strength to steel. Recall that cellulose is one of the key natural materials in nature.

This material has been possible due to the use of ultra-bright X-rays. Thanks to this technology, they were able to analyze structures and hierarchical order of the super strong fibers, managing to manufacture several meters of it with about 15 microns of thickness.

Being ecological, it is a material that could replace the plastic industry in a few decades, and also has an incredible potential in medicine since the body does not reject cellulose.
