Mono-wheel - Science Fiction ?

A Mono-wheel is an amazing vehicle consisting of only one wheel. The very first mono-wheel was patented in 1869 by Georg Bergner from Washington. This first mono-wheel was however human powered.

The photo below on the left shows the first motorised mono-wheel from 1904. The one on the right is from 1910, with a more conventional motorcycle seating position. Note the chair like seat of the one from 1904.

One of the big problems of a mono-wheel is the possibility of the rider to rotate with the wheel under acceleration or under breaking.

The photo below from 1917 has a propeller as drive. The advantage of a propeller pulling is that it eliminated the tendency for the engine and driver to rotate with the wheel. Just think how dangerous it would be with a number of these going up and down the road!! This give a complete new meaning of feeling the wind in your hair!!

Below is a photo of a more modern take on the mono wheel where the driver and engine is still inside the wheel, at the bottom of the post there is a video of this type of mono wheel in action.

Below there is another take on the mono-wheel concept. It looks nice, but I wonder how you will keep your balance under hard breaking and acceleration. There also is a video of this type of mono-wheel at the bottom of the post. (Just check the name, it is the same as my name, unfortunately I did not come up with this idea.)

Only time will tell if this concept will ever take off!!

You can't get your but much closer to the road than this.

See how difficult it is to ride this mono-wheel in the video below!!

The video below from 1935 is amazing. I would not mind to have one off these in my garage.

Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed it.

Not as popular as the e-scooter thing though

Hi @ace108 Thank you for the link, it looks very nice.

You're welcome. I considered getting one before but the users of these i have seen can be quite reckless. Some even go on the road with this.
