Colored Water Droplets Come To "Life"

in #science8 years ago (edited)

Working in a science lab Nate Cira observed a curious phenomenon. Colored water droplets seemed to animate when put together. With the help researcher Adrien Benusiglio they worked for three years to figure out what was driving the droplets to move as if they were alive. They found that the droplets mimic living cells using the same basic principles. Two forces govern the different liquids in a solution in propylene glycol and water.
Surface tension if the first force in play, it holds the liquid molecules together. Creating a tumbling motion due the movement of the hardest molecules. The other force is somewhat the opposite, evaporation, where the molecules on the surface of a liquid are forced to break away to form a gas, determining the direction they move.

When two drops of colored water are placed near each other, evaporation increases the humidity in the tiny space of air between them. That, in turn, reduces evaporation and increases the surface tension on the inner side of each droplet. On the outer side, the rate of evaporation remains the same, and these imbalances pushes the droplets towards each other. - qz.com
