15 days of darkness - Tinfoilhat bullsh*t

in #science7 years ago

Every few months there's some fake news that can be read online with slight variations to "spice it up" a bit. These news, for some strange reason, are spread by people that is totally ignorant (as in, generically ignorant). The reason behind these "news & warnings" are beyond my comprehension, other than to measure the amount of mentally impaired people that has access to internet.

Now we've this new one:
15 days of darkness from November 15th to the 30th, thanks to an astronomic event where Venus and Jupiter are involved. Of course, NASA has nothing to do with this, but the original author does not need them to, since the people that spreads those news are not the kind that usually verifies sources. Now... what if this was actually true? What if Earth ever went "into the darkness"?

If ever ever went dark for such time the first ones to suffer the consequences would be the plants. With no light, no photosynthesis or chlorophyllic functions would happen. Trees and most small plants are prepared to survive long periods with lack of sunlight (otherwise there would be none in places where the "night" lasts for most of the winter months). "But" what would affect them the most is the radical drop in temperatures of the environments.

In just 48 hours the average Earth temperature would drop down to 0°C (32°F) and after that, during the successive days, it would drop further down to -11°C (12.2°F) or less, depending on the area of the planet. With such temperatures most of the vegetal species would inevitably perish. This would affect other species that depend on them to survive and sustain, they would all perish. Herbivores that are not fed and kept safe from the elements in farms would die by the thousands, while carnivores would lack of food to sustain themselves (scavengers may have a bit of surplus food, for a while).
We would also affected under that panorama, human death rates would spike at some areas of the globe, where we are not used to cold or even prepared for it.

Life would survive, because it always does. Earth's life did not get to this point thanks to its inability to adapt and survive. 15 days of catastrophe would be a serious blow, but not a final one. Ecosystems would have to totally re-adapt and biodiversity would find a real challenge (and also a chance to show off why it does exist!).
Earth, would not be the same after 15 days of darkness, it would reshape for centuries after the event.

Lucky us, the whole thing is nothing but bullshit, just like it was dozens of times before. Sun will still shine in November and, as far as we know, our Star has plenty of fuel to keep working steady for more time that we -as species- will probably witness.

I'm sick of these idiots too, they do it because it creates controversy and controversy is a good way to generate buzz, that's why we get all the flat earth idiots trying to tell us something that clearly is a pile of crap. I saw a video on DTube yesterday of some guy trying to say that city lights visible from the international space station were a "mother ship" lol.

I watch that kind of things to replace the last page of the newspaper!

I cannot help it, I end up laughing for HOURS!

There are a lot of fake news and stories floating around in the internet. We have to be discerning.

This was a fun post. I love the breakdown of what that event would mean. I love the written visual. Thank you for sharing :)

I love fakenews, I once was featured by them for this article:

Good point ... I also don’t like the fact that there is an unfair voting system on steemit .... what do you think ?
