Apparently, their entire function is to employ a bunch of useless theoretical physicists who would otherwise be flipping burgers at McDonald's. This is no different from me saying that according to my calculations, there should be 25 flying pink elephants at 15,000 feet on any given day. Then, I take billions in taxpayer dollars and commit vast resources to proving my math (only to find I transposed a denominator somewhere in my scribblings).
