Lumba-lumba yang sering dilihat di kebun binatang dan beberapa tempat taman hiburan adalah jenis lumba-lumba besar. Lumba-lumba dapat tinggal di air selama tiga sampai dengan empat menit. Saat sedang tidur, lumba-lumba mengambang sedalam 50 cm dibawah permukaan air dan naik kepermukaan setiap 30 detik sekali. Semua itu terjadi secara otomatis, tanpa ada bangun sama sekali. Lumba-lumba menghabiskan waktu dengan berburu, bermainn, dan berkomunikasi sesamanya. Binatang yang satu ini terbilang cukup cerdas dan suka bergaul. Lumba-lumba juga memiliki jiwa sosial yang tinggi. Sesekali kita dapat melihat dia menolong lumba-lumba lain yang sedang sakit atau terluka. Bahkan dia juga menolong orang yang jatuh ke laut. Bahkan sejauh ini ada juga ditemukan beberapa lumba-lumba yang berenang menuju pantai sambil mendorong perahu yang terbawa arus sampai ketengah samudra. Lubang kecil yang terlihat di atas kepala lumba-lumba adalah lubang hidung. Gunanya hanya untuk bernapas, bukan sebagai indera penciuman. Lubang itu akan terbuka jika lumba-lumba berada di permukaan air.

Pola Hidup : Makanan : lumba-lumba mengonsumsi berbagai jenis ikan, cumi-cumi dan udang. Pemangsa dan Ancaman : Musuh utama lumba-lumba adalah keluarganya sendiri, yakni paus pembunuh, diwilayah tertentu lumba-lumba juga diburu oleh manusia. Kehidupan Sosial : Lumba-lumba suka bersosialisasi, dia hidup berkelompok, tanpa pemimpin, beranggotakan sampai 15 lumba-lumba, yang tampak seperti pasukan besar, dan saling menolong.

Reproduksi : Kematangan Seksual : betina 5-12 tahun, jantan 9-13 tahun. Perkawinan : Sepanjang tahun, terutama pada bulan Maret sampai dengan Agustus. Lumba-lumba jantan dan betina mencari pasangan baru setiap tahun. Masa Kehamilan : 12 bulan. Perkembangbiakan : seekor anak setiap dua atau tiga tahun.

Perlindungan : Lumba-lumba besar tidak terancam. Situasi sebaliknya terjadi pada jenis lumba-lumba lain, seperti lumba-lumba air tawar.

Lain-Lain : Kecepatan : lumba-lumba berenang dengan kecepatan sekitar 45 km/jam, tetapi juga bisa melaju hingga kecepatan 100 km/jam. Lumba-lumba dapat meloncat hingga ketinggian 4 m. Bahasa : lumba-lumba bersiul dengan beberapa nada dan mengeluarkan bunyi gemercik secara permanen sampai 1.000 kali per detik untuk berkomunikasi dengan kawan-kawannya. Selain itu, lumba-lumba juga menggunakan suara untuk menentukan arah karena adanya pantulan suara ketika suara itu membentur penghalang, terjadi pantulan yang menghasilkan gema sehingga lumba-lumba dapat menentukan arah, menghindari penghalang dan juga mengenali mangsa. Suara tersebut dihasilkan oleh lubang hidung pada bagian kepala lumba-lumba.
