Korean shamanism includes a variety of adat beliefs and practices that have been influenced by Buddhism and Taoism. In present-day Korea, shamanism goes by the name "muism and shaman mudang".

Mudang, usually a woman, acts as a prayer between god or god and man. Those who want help from the spirit world are asking for help from this Korean dukun. The dukun's duty usually invokes luck for clients, cures illness by evicting evil spirits, or reconciling villages. Sometimes they also help guide the spirits of the dead to heaven. Uniquely, Shamanism is regarded as a different religion but has permeated into the daily life of its people. Shamans perform shamanic ceremonies to invoke the benefits of spiritual help, for various reasons (eg, marriage, death, moving to a new home). Often a woman will be reluctant to return to being a mudang, after experiencing severe physical or mental illness.
