Turning Plastic into Oil

Nairobi uses about 250 tons of plastic daily. To combat the vast amount of waste, a company has devised a way to use the waste and convert it into a marketable produce, diesel oil.
Locals collect about 12 tons daily and they use the money they receive to supplement their income. They transport the waste plastic to the facility, Alternative Energy Systems, for processing. The plastic is first shredded and the shredded waste is heated to remove some of the water. After the plastic is dried it can be processed into diesel by thermocracking. It takes about 12 tons of plastic to product 7 thousand liters of oil.
Rajesh Kent opened the recycling facility in 2017, his goal was to create a company that could take advantage of the discarded waste and produce something of value that could aid in the growth of this community.
