The amygdalin substance reacts with the beta-glucosidase enzyme in the body and forms hydrogen cyanide (HCN) which is toxic to humans. Hydrogen cyanide exposure is associated with asphyxia and death. Hydrogen cyanide is known to cause systemic poisoning, often leading to severe cardiovascular and respiratory problems. Nausea, drowsiness and headache are the most common side effects of hydrogen cyanide exposure.
