How your antibacterial hand soap might be harming you

in #science7 years ago (edited)

Throughout the day, our hands touch products or furniture that have toxic chemicals and we often do not wash them before touching our mouths or eating. So while it's important to regularly wash our hands to avoid infection from spreading, we should be very careful about the products we use to wash them.The average liquid hand soap from your local store has antibacterial agents that are known to be harmful. In fact, they are known to leak into urine, as well as breastmilk. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) banned last year the use of triclocarban, and triclosan as well as seventeen other disinfectant from all household soaps. Their two main reasons are;

1. They do have any benefit

2.They have been proven to be unsafe

One of these disinfectant, Triclosan, was a chemical initially used by surgeons during and after surgery; a must when removing bacteria. Using it commercially can be dangerous, and aside from creating resistance to antibiotics, low level exposure can also unsettle thyroid function. This chemical has also been linked to inhalation and liver toxicity. So what can you do to protect yourself and your family? Well, there are two options. Use plain old water and soap, or make your own liquid hand soap with natural ingredients. I do the latter because I like to choose what's in my products.

How to make your own hand soap (my own recipe)

You will need honey, olive oil, liquid castile soap and essential oil for fragrance. Preparation time is 5 minutes!

1. Pour two tablespoons of honey into a jug, then add about 4 tablespoons of olive oil.

2. Then add about 10 drops of your preferred essential oil. I like to use two different ones for this.

3. Add about 6-8 table spoons of the liquid castile soap to give it foam. You can always add more if you feel it's not foamy enough.

4. Pour all the ingredients into a dispenser and then shake it well.

Ta-da! You have yourself a homemade non-toxic liquid hand soap.

Note: The measurements I have used here do not fill the dispenser because I like to use different ingredients, so I only made this for two weeks. Just double or triple the ingredients depending how long you want to use them for.

@nomad17 Its very interesting info.. Great post keep it up.

So interesting I was just reading about this today with this article http://joedubs.com/the-fallacious-germ-theory/ you might find it interesting. I was going to write up my own post on it also. :D

Wow what a coincidence! Thanks for sharing the link, I'll look it up :) You should still write about it since it's a great topic!

Yea I know. I think I will tomorrow. The best thing about creating here on Steemit or anywhere is that you learn more in the process. Whenever I want to learn more about something, I can research and do a post also on Steemit. Very productive being here. Thanks @nomad17 you rock!

Thanks @bitdollar! I agree with you; there is so much great content on steemit where we can learn, share and exchange ideas. I look forward to reading your post :)
