First Time Observed: Decay of Higgs-Boson

Decay of Higgs-Boson into Quarks observed for the first time at CERN



At the nuclear research center CERN in the near of Genf Switzerland, scientists managed to observe the decay of a Higgs-Boson (also known as "God particle") into two Bottom-Quarks of the third particle generation of the Standard Model of particle physics for the first time. The discovery proves theoretical prognoses and explains the short lifespan of Higgs particles, scientists say.

Until know, scientists could prove without any doubts, that the "God particle" decays into so called W- and Z- Bosons, Photons and Tau-Leptons. The decay of the Higgs-Boson into a pair of b-Quarks, which emerges with a probability of around 60 percent, couldn't be observed til now.

The observation succeeded with using the particle accelerator called Large Hadron Collider (LHC), regarding to CERN. Scientists have analyzed data sets, which have been recorded with the ATLAS-Detector at LHC between 2015 and 2016.

This evidence about the decay of the Higgs-Boson into Bottom-Quarks is an important milestone regarding exploration of Higgs-Properties.

Karl Jakobs, a speaker of the ATLAS-Collaboration says.

The discovery of the Higgs particle through experiments at ATLAS and CMS at the LHC accelerator at CERN in the year 2012, represent a milestone in physics. The existence of this particle was predicted 50 years ago.
