Artificial neural networks made of DNA recognizing handwritten numbers

The research was published in the science journal Nature a technology with a sense of the future. How the molecule itself has become Artificial Intelligence (AI).

This project entitled Scaling up recognition of molecular patterns with DNA-based was done in the laboratory of Ms. Lulu Qian of the California Institute of Technology.

The content is to make an artificial neural network which carries out "data processing" using DNA-based chemistry. But it is hard to imagine... The essence is to use a chemical reaction of DNA to make a data processing mechanism.

According to the blog article of the Institute, DNA-based artificial neural networks have been studied so far, but the information discriminating ability seems to be limited. In this research, designed a grid circuit made on the DNA base and treated the chemical reaction at each point like a bit in digital. It seems that succeeded in identifying handwritten numbers replaced by chemical substances.

This research explains that Neural networks composed of deliberately designed DNA sequences proved. The numerical characters created by molecules can be accurately identified through chemical reactions. In the past, the neural network was a system on a computer developed simulating brain data processing

How to identify handwritten numbers with DNA-based neural networks is as follows.

First, set the 10x10 pixel array. Each pixel corresponds to a molecule of one DNA chain, and a total of 100 pixels are represented by this group of molecules. If you draw handwritten numbers in the form of selecting 20 pixels on 10×10 pixels... you can convert it to a combination of 20 DNA strands corresponding to handwritten numbers.

Mixing the handwritten number converted into a group of molecules with the DNA-based neural network of the test tube. It was possible to identify one of the numbers 1 to 9.

The ultimate goal of Qian's laboratory is using an artificial neural network, which was created by the "DNA, produce intelligence programs, that determine the operation apparently.

Further development of this artificial molecular neural network mechanism, Qian says that it will be possible to make objects like paint and bandage that respond to the environment. Material made by modeling the structure of the brain will become intelligent...

Though our everyday lives are already full of things with data processing abilities, this range may be expanded further.
