What are Sun Dogs and what causes them?

Sun Dogs

Sun dogs, or to give them their proper name, Parhelia, are an atmospheric phenomenon where bright spots become visible on either side of the sun. They are created when the conditions are such that light interacts with ice crystals high up in the atmosphere.

Sun dogs appear at approx. 22° to the left and the right of the sun

They can be seen during any season, anywhere in the world, but they are not always bright or obvious. They are usually most visible when the sun is close to the horizon.

I took the photo above one evening in the Autumn last year.
