Educational Neurology!!

The neuroeducación or neurodidactic is a new vision of teaching that is based on providing educational strategies and technologies focused on the functioning of the brain. This new educational discipline merges knowledge about neuroscience, psychology and education, with the aim of optimizing the teaching and learning process.

THE NEUROEDUCATION

It is a discipline bridge between neurology and the sciences of education, in which educational psychology has a key role.

It is a scientific development project in which we want to combine the knowledge we have about how the brain works with what is known about educational processes in the field. Normally, the area in which neuroeducation is centered is education in school and academic environments.

Neuroeducation or neurodidactics is a very recent field of action, in which both educators and neuroscientists collaborate. In this emerging field specialties such as neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science and education to improve teaching methods and school programs converge.

It is a learning dynamic based on neurosciences, whose purpose is to apply everything that is known about how the brain learns and what things stimulate brain development in the school environment.

Factors involved in neuroeducation

  • Brain plasticity and neurogenesis

Brain plasticity has been one of the most relevant discoveries in the field of neuroscience. The brain is "plastic", that is, it has a great ability to adapt throughout life. It is also capable of constantly creating new neurons and connections between them if it is provided with the appropriate stimulation.

  • Mirror neurons

Mirror neurons are a group of brain cells that are activated both when we perform an action and when we observe someone perform it. And not only happens with actions, but also with emotional expressions. Therefore, it is believed that they are the basis of empathy and the acquisition of language. The knowledge about mirror neurons is very important for neuroeducation or neurodidactics.

  • Emotions and learning

Emotions interact with cognitive processes, which is why a key part of neuroeducation refers to managing emotions so that not only do they not interfere but also benefit the learning process. It is intended to teach children to be aware of their feelings and take control of these and their behavior. It is important that they learn to recognize when they are angry, sad and able to handle these emotions. In addition, a high level of stress hinders learning, so it is important to create a good learning climate, without stress, and teach them how to handle anxiety.

But not only managing negative emotions helps us improve our academic performance, but it is also known that the learning of material that evokes emotions will be learned better and will be more permanent. This is what is called meaningful learning.

  • CogniFit Educational Platform leader of neuroeducation in the classroom

The neuroeciencia and neurodidactic increasingly have more weight in schools that want to optimize their teaching processes. The educational technology of CogniFit, based on neuroeducation, has been applied in different schools around the world, being highly effective for all students, but above all, for those who have specific needs or learning difficulties.

CogniFit Neuroeducation in the classroom, is a scientific tool for educators, designed to help identify some of the neurological causes that may be related to school failure and rehabilitate the main cognitive functions of children.

How does it work? The first thing students should do is complete the cognitive assessment. All mental games of CogniFit Neuroeducation, have been designed and validated clinically to identify the cognitive weaknesses and strengths involved learning: Attention, memory, perception and reasoning.

Using the results of this initial evaluation, CogniFit automatically schedules a personalized brain training dynamic, designed specifically to improve the cognitive needs of each student.

School failure is one of the most prominent concerns in the education system. That is why it is important to apply knowledge about the brain to education. Count in schools with neuroeducational tools and initiatives that allow the integration of procedures so that all students can adequately develop their learning potential.

What neurological discoveries can be used in education?

The fundamentals are the following:

  • Studies on brain plasticity show that the ability to learn at any age is greater than what is thought.

  • The great obstacle that prevented the application of neurology to the school begins to be solved. Neurology has made great progress in the study of neuronal 'syntax', that is, in how nerve impulses originate and are transmitted, in the structure of networks, but less in how these impulses become meanings (semantics) and in conscious meanings. These are, however, the ones we handle at school. The study of pattern recognition is serving as a nexus between neuronal syntax and semantics.

  • We are aware of the changes that occur in the adolescent brain, which will allow us to take advantage of this 'second golden age' of learning.

  • We progress in the knowledge of memory, which is the organ of learning and, therefore, the foundation of education. Two themes stand out for their educational relevance. First, the neurology of habit formation, which are the core of learning. Secondly, the studies on memory in action ('working memory'), which tell us that intelligence is fundamentally memory management.
