Exclusive for Steemit - Article on the Science and fact behind my first novel - Deadlier Than The MalesteemCreated with Sketch.

in #science8 years ago (edited)

I’ve been serialising my first novel Deadlier Than The Male in an exclusive for Steemit series.

I’ve put a lot of my dark humour into the book and I was reminded of that with a comment from @mgaft1.

I also tried to put scientific fact into the myth. Yes, I know, it’s a story, it’s a mythical beast, it’s not real, but I wanted my readers to actually read the book and think ‘Hang on…’
There are a few ‘Hang on…’ moments in the story because I’ve also woven historical facts into it too.

The science I researched was prompted by my frustration at the old werewolf tales I remember from my younger days; film and stories/books.

For example, a werewolf’s paw is cut off and it changes to a hand. How does a limb change from one state to another without being attached to a source of energy? It can’t be done. Even a dismembered frog’s leg needs external electrical force to make it ‘jump’ (science class).

Then there was the mass aspect. A wolf, no matter how large, is not really equal to the mass of a human, so my Wolves (yes, they prefer the word to be capitalised) are bigger than a normal wolf.

Then there’s the reason they kill. Yes, I know it’s fun for them, but there are also reasons, again based in science.

My Wolves kill because of the benefits human glands provide. They not only savour the flavour of meat marinated in human emotion – fear, sexual excitement, jealousy – they also gain strength, youthfulness etc from the glands they harvest.

If you’re at all interested in reading the book in its entirety, it’s available from Amazon and all good bookstores. If you’re happy to be hand-fed pieces (almost) daily, that’s fine too. Keep reading ;)

Just because this seems to have got a little more attention than I thought it would, I'm adding the links to the first parts of the story.
