Nerve-stimulation therapy may be helpful for the patients who are in vegetative condition

in #science7 years ago

In a recent experiment it is found that nerve-stimulation therapy may help restore the life of the patients who are in vegetative state for many years.

What is vegetative state?

The patients in vegetative state may have their eyes opened but they don’t have any consciousness and so they can’t identify any people or anything surrounding. They may move their body organ but it is involuntary. Some movements can be seen on their face like smiling or yawning. They may also move their hand if it feels a pain or a sudden movement can be seen in their body due to loud noise.

Fifteen years ago, there was a car accident occurred in France in which a man's brain was injured badly and he went to the Vegetative State. Now, a new experiment called nerve-stimulation therapy conducted on the patient which could successfully be able to partially get back his conscious. It has already proved that this therapy is also capable to heal the diseases like depression and epilepsy. But it is still yet to confirm that this therapy could help the patient regain their memory or get back from vegetative state. It needs more trials to prove it. But the little success from this nerve-stimulation therapy provided a new way and hope to scientists to find the proper treatment to restore consciousness of the patients in vegetative state.

This is really interesting - I used to work on nerve tissue engineering as a grad student and one of my projects involved electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves (NOT spinal column/brain nerves, which are central nerves). The theory was that electrical signals would encourage nerve growth after damage to the nerve. It was quite preliminary work, but it's encouraging to see that others are exploring nerve stimulation as a means to help people with much worse than peripheral nerve injuries, but central nervous system disease.
