Hello my lovely Steemian.

I am starting this new segment called What Happens!!!, to answer some of the things we think we know but are actually no way near the correct answer. Some of you might already know the answers but others might not, so being an engineer I feel that everyone should know the correct answers to some of the basic questions out there.
So for kicking off this new segment let us venture out into mysterious vast reaches of space.

What happens to our body in space?

As I am sure you all must have seen the exaggerated clips of a Hollywood movie where an astronaut gets locked out and runs out of oxygen or someone evil maniac throwing their crew off the ship(Gaurdians of the Galaxy 2) out of sheer fun of it. So your guess can be

• freezing to death
• all of our blood boiling
• we explode

If you think of these above options, well then you are wrong, and I will explain to you why you are wrong.
If your answer was freezing to death : this is an obvious choice because the space is very cold, about 2.7K(-270 C) so we should freeze instantaneously and become some sort of Whitewalker But the conduction law states that in order for our body to lose heat there must be something where the heat can be transferred. So in vacuum having not even air the heat can not be transferred to anything so we don't freeze to death.

If your answer was all of our blood boiling : this idea was presented in the sci-fi movies on a logic that the lower the pressure falls the lower the boiling point of liquid is. So in the space having low pressure, the blood will boil instantaneously. So this idea has some science going for it till now. But in actuality the blood in our body doesn't get exposed directly to the vacuum of space and is actually subjected to the internal body pressure. So our blood will not boil.

If your answer was we would explode : while on earth our body exert an counter active pressure to the pressure exerted by the atmosphere but if you lost you way and went out of the ship without a suit then in space pressure is almost negligible so you might think that the pressure applied by our body from the inside will make us explode but that's not true because the connective tissues in our body and also your skin will sustain that pressure. So as long as your connective tissues remain intact so will your body.

Answer

So you might think that if all these things will not happen then you might not even die at all. But no, you definitely will die, you are not someone who can survive in space like Superman.

• So the first thing that will happen is that all of the air will rush out of your body because of the pull of the vacuum. So imagine air rushing out of your intestines!! Won't be a pretty site I am guessing.
• In about 15 sec you would blackout, because this the amount of time which blood takes from lungs to reach to brain and with no air around the brain will get no oxygen and you would blackout.
• All of the body fluid that are directly exposed to space, like your saliva would start to boil, again due to low pressure the saliva will start to boil at body temperature.

So these are some of the things that will actually happen if somehow you get stuck in space without a spacesuit or a spacesuit with a tiny hole
