Due to the high concentration of iridium in meteorites, scientists believed that the dust was originated from a large meteor impacted. Some even hypothesized that this impact was the cause of the extinction of dinosaurs.
Wasn't this confirmed with a crater found somewhere in Mexico that has the right dimensions and the right date? Note that I may be wrong here.

I just looked in to it and it was called Chicxulub crater

This just make me recall some scientist had been proposed that Hong Kong is also made up of a crater XDD
But still a lot of debate on it haha

Thanks for the links! Do you by the way know whether the HK crater story agreed by others in this field?
Actually I don't know any people in the field. I am just an amateur geologist (<-- actually it's chemistry again XD). But I start to find some local books about hiking or Hong Kong geology cited this crater hypothesis, as well as internet (as it can be a really eye catching title).
Yet, there is another hypothesis (published on 2007) that saying it is not a crater but a revived caldera.
The former one seems more common, at least i had came across to it randomly couple times
