A Pill To Fight Loneliness

in #science6 years ago

Out of all the feelings that can have an effect on our physical condition as well, loneliness is one of the least understood and clinically.

But loneliness can have real serious long-term effects on our body’s health. That is why scientists from the Brain Dynamics Lab with the Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine started working on pills that could allow us to fight this emotion. But how would they work.

Stephanie Cacioppo says that simply said – loneliness is what happens when certain chemical signals encourage you to be social but our hyper-cautious minds perceive it as a social danger. This is why Cacioppo and her colleagues focused on a hormone known as pregnenolon. This hormone is capable of “calming” the mind down and lower the amount of perceived social danger.

Obviously, there are more “normal” ways to battle loneliness. The most commonly used are hobbies. But there are people who are so deep into being lonely that they aren’t capable of going out. And those are exactly the people who could use these pills.
