Breakthrough: scientists have discovered a heavy duty source of clean energy

in #science8 years ago

Specialists of the Laboratory of nanobiology Polytechnic school of Lausanne has opened a new technology of "clean" energy. The system includes fresh water and salt water, and the membrane thickness of three atoms between them, according to Phys.

 How it works
The semi-permeable membrane – it separates the fluids, where the concentration of different salts. The system seeks to come into osmotic equilibrium: while the concentration of salts in both parts of the system will not be the same, the ions will pass through the membrane. Electricity generated by the movement of ions that have electric charge.

In the experiment, the specialists used a membrane of molybdenum disulfide. Salt ions have sought to pass through the nanopores, which it has, and this moment is transferred to the electrode and then used for energy.
1 square meter of membrane, 30% of which is occupied by the nanopores, enough to produce 1 MW of electricity
This system will power about 50 thousand energy-saving light bulbs. The cost of installation is low, since the molybdenum disulfide distributed in nature. Scientists also do not see any obstacles to expansion for clean energy to an industrial scale.
