Whatever I'm Writing Here Has Been Predetermined

in #science8 years ago

I have proof. And it's in this thing called the Library of Babel. It's like a library that has existed since the beginning of time. It contains every possible piece of writing anyone has ever written, or will write in the future.

Any text you find in any location of the library will be in the same place in perpetuity.

A vast majority of the library's content will never be made known to the human consciousness. This brings about an interesting thought. It is commonly theorized in the sciences that there are infinite parallel universes. Like an infinite state machine. If everything has been a long-chain of cause and effects rolled out by the genesis block - or the Big Bang, it pretty much says that everything has been predetermined. So how do we explain Consciousness and the human Free Will in such a deterministic worldview?

As we swim through this ether as new thoughts manifests into actions that mold our shared reality, we are essentially tapping into the many different configurations of the state machine. The possibilities may have been predetermined, but it is in our human will that makes the possibilities endless. Just like how we get to discover any articles in the Library of Babel as long as we have those words in mind.

In the beginning were the Words, and the Words made the World, I am the Words. The words are everything. Where the Words end the World ends. You cannot go forward in an absence of space.
--- Elohim, The Talos Principle

It is with this simple thought that I appreciate Ethereum's Turing Completeness. But I digress.

You can find this exact article above in Browse The Library of Babel. How can we verify this? Is there any downloadable version of this so called "library"?

If I download all the content TODAY and tomorrow I can verify that some of my posts that I made AFTER I downloaded this so called "library" are indeed in this "library" then I will be convinced, otherwise it's just HUGE BS.

I suppose there's a seed involved. Here's the excerpt from the About section of the website:-

Since I imagine the question will present itself in some visitors’ minds (a certain amount of distrust of the virtual is inevitable) I’ll head off any doubts: any text you find in any location of the library will be in the same place in perpetuity. We do not simply generate and store books as they are requested - in fact, the storage demands would make that impossible. Every possible permutation of letters is accessible at this very moment in one of the library's books, only awaiting its discovery.

By the way, you can find what you've just written ;) . Ok, I just did some googling... it seems to be more complicated but I think that their statements about "libraries", "books", and storage about everything that has been writeen or will be writeen in the future, is MISLEADING.

Replace the characters with numbers from 1 to 25 and I think that all that remains is games with numbers.

Impressive but still misleading in my opinion.

Explain how your wall of garbage text is converted into readable text.

That gibberish wall of text is basically a very Big Number. The Library is immensely huge and hence requires a Big Number to refer to its "sub-buildings" to go to, in order to find the Wall, Shelf, Volume, and Page to look into :)

You did not answer the question.

We do not simply generate and store books as they are requested - in fact, the storage demands would make that impossible.

LOL this is BS and obviously not true!

Every possible permutation of letters is accessible at this very moment in one of the library's books, only awaiting its discovery.

LOL again! The storage demands would make THIS impossible.

Where did he get those "library books"?

Btw my first question quoted again below still remains unanswered...

How can we verify this? Is there any downloadable version of this so called "library"?

Ah ok I see where you're getting at. You're assuming that a random pointer is generated instead of a seed-generated totality of contents. No way of knowing unless the owner releases his codes..

i think there are interesting use cases with the library for legal loopholes..

Thank you, I am very intrigued by the concept of the Library.
Very interesting cross-disciplinary project and I will explore this further

the creator even made a twitter bot that spews gibberish once every few minutes. it's like having a monkey type on the keyboard until familiar words appear xD
