RE: What Grinds My Gears? Flat Earth Theory.

in #science8 years ago (edited)

Well I can't answer everything but I have some responses

  1. Colour-correct. Very common practice for engineering, especially when signals are sampled from unusual environments. Or else, it's very hard to see anything properly. So stuff are enhanced / color-coded for human sight to comprehend. AFAIK, all space photos are processed this way. My personal experience is doing it for some satellite imageries and microscopic ones.
  2. Not too sure about the treaty, but I've a few friends who went there. It's a harsh place and I'd venture anyone will be able to venture out on their own. The treaty is most likely a formality and wouldn't touch any individual who decides to do their own adventuring, at their risk of course.
  3. I remember going through this uni before. It's the map transform I believe (dont remember much about this case). But yea agree it does look strange, but not just for southern hemisphere flights.

I think I feel a post coming on! This is a huge and interesting subject. Just to respond to your 2nd point, it is 100% not possible for an explorer (no matter how wealthy or prepared they are) to explore this region without a provided escort, who won't let you go more than 30 miles inland. And there are only three possible entry points to Antartica (all guarded by the military). Entering from anywhere else is strictly forbidden.

Some rich friends of mine put in a proposal to independently explore further into Antartica and were told in no uncertain terms this was never going to happen. Guided tours only!
