How many of us find waking up difficult in the morning??? Know the Reason why !!

Today We shall talk about something very basic and awesome.

I still remember the time when I was a kid, I used to wake up early, even before sunrise. Go to nearby store with my granny to get couple of packets of milk. Then spend early morning hours with her walking, chilling, having fun, watching sun rise, listening birds sing and all fun stuffs. Everything was so real and exciting, not at all difficult by any means.

But when I think about those days, today feels boring. Nothing is more difficult than leaving my bed in the morning.

                                  

This keeps me wondering, Why is it so difficult to wake up in the morning??

Basically, things are not the way they were then, I guess. With time, we grew up and may be we started to feel things less exciting. May be there is nothing that is exciting enough to wake up early in the morning and do.

But Hey Hey Hey !! 

LETS TALK SCIENCE 

There is something called SLEEP CYCLE. Each sleep cycle consists of around 90 mins during a normal night of sleep. 

The stages of sleep cycle 

Stage I

  •  First 20 mins.
  •  In the process of trying to sleep.
  • It is very easy to wake up.
  • So called Light sleep.

Stage II

  • Real sleep starts.
  • Highly deeper stage of sleep and slightly harder to wake up.  

Stage III

  • Dead sleep (walk /talk in sleep)
  • slow wave sleep.

Stage IV

  • REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep
  • Sometimes also called paradoxical sleep (active mind, paralyzed body)
  • Active form of sleep associated with dreaming.
  • Difficult to wake up.

In normal night of uninterrupted sleep, we cycle through these stages for about 4-5 times each. The order within the cycle tends to go from Stage I --->Stage II --->Stage III and again to Stage II before entering to Stage IV(REM sleep) and back to Stage I where the cycle starts all over again. That's the whole process of the sleep cycle.  

So, if we sleep for six hours, we are going through four sleep cycles. The reason why a lot of us can't wake up or struggle to wake up is because we wake up in the wrong time i.e we wake up in the middle of a sleep cycle. Or we just have 1 or 2 cycles, which is not enough at all.

So if we want to wake up better, sleeping in time is the best we can do. This will have us enough time to complete all the sleep cycles. As the sleep cycles keeps on repeating itself, 5-15 minutes delay will also ensure  that we are still in light stage of another sleep cycle making waking up not miserable.
