Carbon fiber is made from carbon atoms which are bonded together in crystals which crates fibers, thousands of fiber and then wounded in tow. One of first carbon fibers were used in a light bulb. In the beginning carbon fibers hadn't have had properties like today because of low level of carbon atoms.
In 1960 Richard Millington managed to get higher level of carbon around 99% and as a base material was used silk. Fibers with high level of carbon have high tensile strength, high stiffness, very low density, good stability on high temperatures.

In 1970 Japanise engineers started to manufacture carbon fibers based on PAN (polyacrylanitrile ), fiber is being heated with extreme temperatures which burs off all besides carbon which is left in long strings or fibers, and first one who started it were Toray, Nippon Carbon, Toho Rayon and Mitsubishi those companies are still on the top for manufacturing carbon fibers.

With further development more types of fiber started to be on the markets which were divided based on their properties, for example we have T400 carbon fiber which is made by Toray and it has 4000 Mpa tensile strength or model M40 with Young’s modulus of 400 Gpa.
Carbon fiber is often described on weight, shape and numbers of filament for example Plane 220g 3K carbon fiber cloth, „Plane“ means type of fabric its usually:
a) plane(1x1), b)twill 2x2, c)4x4, d)unidirectional, e)biaxial f)milled carbon, g)chopped fibers and h)tow

1x1, 2x2, 4x4 means how many tow strings are crossing each other, there is spread tow fabric.

Next „220g“ is for weight of fabric per 1m^2, usually you can find 80, 100, 160, 200, 280, 300, 380, 400, 470, 600, 1000, 1370 g.
„3K“ naming like 3 6 12 24K is relation to number of fibers per tow, so 3k means 3000 fibers in tow.
